The Expanding Role of Medical Robots in Modern Healthcare

Medical robots have become a vital part of today's healthcare systems, offering valuable support across clinical care, patient mobility, medical training, and assistance for individuals with disabilities. These robots are generally classified into six categories based on their functions: hospital logistics robots, patient mobility robots, clinical robots, rehabilitation and assistive robots, nursing robots, and medical training robots.

1. Hospital Logistics Robots

These robots automate routine hospital tasks such as delivering medications, transporting meals to isolation wards, and handling linens and medical waste. Integrated with central dispatch systems, they can navigate hospital environments autonomously-opening doors, using elevators, avoiding obstacles, and self-charging. Some models include UV disinfection capabilities and support two-way audio/video communication for remote interaction between patients and medical staff. By handling routine deliveries, they significantly ease the workload on nursing staff.

2. Patient Mobility Robots

These robots are designed to assist in moving patients with limited mobility, such as those who are paralyzed or bedridden. They help nurses safely transfer patients, reducing physical strain and improving efficiency in patient care.

3. Clinical Robots

Used in surgeries and diagnostics, clinical robots offer high precision and control. Notable examples include Japan's WAPRU-4, designed for thoracic tumor diagnosis, and the U.S.-developed Da Vinci Surgical System, which enables complex procedures like heart valve repair and tumor removal via robotic arms. NASA has also explored remote robotic surgery for use in space and underwater labs, with doctors operating the robots from Earth.
Military applications are also emerging-such as the U.S. military's Battlefield Trauma Management System, a $12 million project that enables robots in armored vehicles to administer emergency care under remote doctor supervision.

4. Rehabilitation and Assistive Robots

These robots, also known as assistive robots, are designed to support individuals with disabilities. They help users perform daily activities independently and regain mobility. For example, the U.S.-based Prab Command System is designed to increase the autonomy of people with physical impairments.

5. Nursing Robots

Nursing robots aim to alleviate the workload on healthcare staff. In the UK, researchers are developing robots that can verify patient identities and dispense medication accurately. Future versions may monitor vital signs, clean hospital rooms, and provide real-time video updates to assist doctors in patient care.

6. Medical Training Robots

These robots simulate real-life medical scenarios for educational purposes. In the U.S., a robot named Noel is used to train obstetrics teams by simulating childbirth-including speech and labor responses. Such tools help medical professionals improve coordination and readiness in high-pressure situations.
