Conquering Complex Coronary Lesions: Live Robotic PCI Demoed by Prof. Zhao Xiliang at CTC 2026
The 2026 Anzhen Coronary Therapeutics Conference (CTC2026), held alongside the Coronary Intervention Salon of China (CISC), the CTO-PCI SUMMIT (CPS), the 2026 Annual Meeting of Critical Care Cardiology, and the Standardized Training Course for Coronary Intervention, successfully took place in Beijing from July 24 to 26.

During CPS@CTC 2026, Professor Zhao Xiliang of Beijing Anzhen Hospital, Capital Medical University, successfully conducted a live PCI demonstration using the WeMed Medical Endovascular Robotic System to treat complex multivessel coronary lesions, effectively highlighting the system's cutting-edge clinical potential to fellow interventionists.
The live case presented a 51-year-old male patient with coronary artery disease complicated by multiple cardiovascular risk factors, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipidemia. The patient had a two-month history of CCS Class II exertional angina, with coronary angiography confirming multivessel disease. Notably, he had previously undergone LM-LAD PCI-a background that demanded exceptional precision and stability during the procedure.

Operating the interventional robot from a separate control room, Professor Zhao Xiliang leveraged its core capabilities-submillimeter precision control and real-time force feedback-to accurately deliver devices such as guidewires and balloons. The procedure proceeded seamlessly and achieved all intended therapeutic outcomes, fully validating the device's safety, efficiency, and clinical utility.

While traditional PCI relies heavily on manual expertise-exposing physicians to prolonged radiation and physical fatigue-robotic intervention offers a transformative alternative. By integrating precise motion control with real-time force feedback that senses device-vessel interactions, the system ensures highly accurate intraoperative decision-making and minimizes vascular trauma. Additionally, remote robotic operation significantly reduces radiation exposure and eliminates the burden of wearing heavy lead aprons during lengthy procedures.
